Project Overview
Onpoint Building Data was contracted to deliver a Level of Detail (LOD) 350 Building Information Model (BIM) for an existing Staples building in Colorado Springs, Colorado, spanning approximately 90,000 square feet. The model aimed to facilitate renovation plans and adapt the space for future needs. A quick turnaround was essential, with a target completion date within 8 days.
Project Scope and Requirements
The Staples building project required an accurate and detailed BIM model at LOD 350. At this level, all elements in the model needed to include precise geometry, placement, and specific details to represent building systems and materials, meeting the requirements for pre-construction and renovation.
Solution: 3D LiDAR Scanning and Revit Modeling
To meet the 8-day deadline, Onpoint Building Data leveraged 3D LiDAR scanning technology. LiDAR was chosen for its speed and precision in capturing spatial data, enabling the team to create a reliable base model with reduced on-site survey time. The LiDAR data was then processed and converted into a Revit model, capturing walls, windows, doors, structural components, and other key building elements required for LOD 350.
Deliverables and Timeline
– Scanning and Data Collection: On Day 1, the team conducted a thorough 3D LiDAR scan of the entire 90,000-square-foot facility. The scanning process ensured that every critical feature of the building was accurately documented.
– Data Processing and Model Creation: Following data collection, Onpoint Building Data imported the scan data into Autodesk Revit, where the team created the LOD 350 model, ensuring that all necessary architectural, structural, and MEP details were accurately represented.
– Model Completion and Delivery: The final model was delivered on Day 8, meeting the client’s timeline and providing a robust foundation for renovation planning.
Key Outcomes
– Precision and Efficiency: By using 3D LiDAR scanning, Onpoint Building Data reduced time traditionally required for manual measurement, achieving a high level of accuracy within the short turnaround.
– Enhanced Planning and Renovation: The LOD 350 model offered a comprehensive, detailed view of the building, enabling stakeholders to make informed decisions in the renovation process.
– Client Satisfaction: Delivering the model on schedule underscored Onpoint’s commitment to reliability and quality, strengthening its relationship with the client and enhancing its portfolio in high-speed, high-accuracy Scan to BIM projects.
This project highlights the effectiveness of Scan to BIM workflows for rapid, accurate building documentation and provides a strong example of how advanced technology can optimize renovation planning.
