Case Study: Store Renovation in Houston, TX

case study

Point Cloud to Revit Model Conversion

Project Overview
A 22,000-square-foot commercial building in Houston, TX, was undergoing a major renovation to prepare for a new tenant. To ensure the renovation process proceeded efficiently and without errors, Onpoint was contracted to convert 3D LiDAR scan data into a precise BIM model. The project required accurate documentation of existing conditions to inform design decisions and streamline construction efforts.

Scope of Work
The project began with a comprehensive 3D LiDAR scan of the building to capture its existing interior and exterior conditions. The scanning process provided a highly accurate point cloud, detailing every architectural and structural feature of the building. Onpoint’s task was to translate this point cloud into a Revit model at Level of Development (LOD) 350. This level of detail ensured that the model included the necessary geometric and spatial information for the design team to proceed with confidence.

The Revit model provided a complete representation of the building, including structural elements, walls, ceilings, doors, and other key features required for the renovation. By utilizing BIM technology, the model became a collaborative tool, enabling architects, engineers, and contractors to coordinate seamlessly.

Deliverables
Onpoint delivered the finalized Revit model within 7 days of receiving the point cloud data. Despite the tight timeline, the model met the high standards required for renovation planning. It served as a comprehensive reference for the project team, reducing the likelihood of errors or omissions during the design and construction phases.

Outcome
The detailed and timely Revit model provided the project team with the precise data needed to move forward efficiently. The use of BIM allowed for better visualization and planning, saving time and costs during the renovation process. The new tenant benefited from a smoother transition into the upgraded space, thanks to the accurate foundation provided by the model.
